We had a FUN day, despite any rain!
Thanks to Karen and the Dobsons.
Congrats to Kalena and Liana for winning the loon and wolf call!
A note was just sent to our membership announcing the upcoming dates for our Annual Meeting and FUN Day. These can always be found in the side bar of the website.
Our Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday July 21st at #115 Star Lake Woods Road
Our FUN Day will be held on the August long weekend, Saturday August 4th (Rain Date August 5th) at #110 Star Lake Woods Road
We would like to remind cottagers to be aware of their wake when boating. Star Lake Woods Association recommends the Safe Quiet Lakes guide of: “SLOW DOWN, BOW DOWN”. Near shore (within 30m) speed should be a maximum of 10km/h to avoid large wake.
Please see the following two links:
Our water testing program with the MLA, has begun. If anyone is a member of the MLA, please let us know as we get a discount for each member of our association who has joined. The cost is $120 annually, which includes their Advantage Card, giving you discounts at participating retailers.
You can see the results, in our post, here.
Below is the proposed Agenda for the Annual Meeting:
Agreement to the By-Laws Constitution *(See Funds Allocation Policy below)
Winter Roads** See note below
** It is proposed that the winter road become an official part of the Star Lake Woods Association. The fee structure would remain the same, but would run through the SLWA account and have separate book keeping. As this is a change in our Constitution, there will need to be a vote on this, which we will do by email, in the weeks following the meeting.
* the agreement to be added to the By-Laws will be as follows:
Funds Allocation Policy
Money collected from the members of the Star Lake Woods Association shall be kept in three separate (booking keeping) accounts for:
a) Star Lake Woods Rd/Hill Top Lane’s remaining funds
b) Morningside Drive’s remaining funds
c) Common expenses, including the common road to the “Y”, Water Testing, Social Events, Administration Fees, etc. and Reserve Fund Common Road (suggest a balance kept of $4000, 30% from Morningside, and 70% from Star Lake Woods/Hill Top)
The treasurer will work with the road manager to advise how much money is available for use on each section of road.
The road manager will work with the President and Vice Presidents from each side to decide on any projects to be done on a yearly basis.
A report from our Treasurer was also included with the email
If you’re a member of the Star Lake Woods Association, and didn’t get the email, please check your spam folder. If you still have not gotten our email, please contact us and let us know, and we can check that we have the correct email address for you.
The fishing derby, fun day, and AGM will take place on Saturday July 25th.
The fishing derby will run from 7am until 12 noon. There is $25 for largest pike and $25 for the largest bass. The cost is $2 and the official weigh in station will be the same as last year on the end of the Thurner dock. All fish must be released at the dock for your entry to count.
The fun day will then begin at 1pmon the Dobson beach. Hot dogs, drinks, and prizes will be included. Thank you to Shirley and Karen for all their hard work.
Finally, the AGM will commence at 7pm at Pat and Gord’s place. Some members of the executive will be stepping down, so if you would like to get involved and make a difference… this is your chance! Last week we cleaned up some small road issues and dropped 22 loads of stone.
We’ve started the Water Testing for the 2015 season, and you can read about the results from 2014 in the post below.
We now have a stone base from Turtle Lake Rd. all the way to the bottom of the big hill and part way on Morningside. The road will also be graded later this week. We are going to stay the course and get stone on the entire road system. Regardless of who grades the road, the stone base is keeping the road in good shape
Please see our Road Update for more details.
We need everyone to pay their dues as our fund is nearly depleted. Have a great summer and we look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday July 25th.
We hope everyone had a pleasant winter and are getting ready to head north. The road has held up quite well over the winter. Putting down all the stone last year really helped preserve the road. Since the long weekend is a little early this year and there is still frost in the ground, we will not be grading the road before the weekend. We have been given reports that it is acceptable for driving. We have five major projects planned for the upcoming season and are getting quotes from two main vendors. The majority of this work will be done in the next two weeks. If you have not paid your dues for this upcoming season we would really appreciate that you take care of this asap as the road work will commence very shortly. We will also send out one more communication after the executive meeting this weekend giving you more details on the road, fun day, fishing derby, agm, water quality, etc. We hope everyone has a great summer season and look forward to seeing everyone on the lake.

The fun day was another huge success this year and the weather cooperated as well. Games such as shoe toss, wheelbarrow rides, three-legged race, leap frog, swimming and tug-of-war were only part of a fantastic day. The best loon call was won by Sophie DeWolf and the best wolf call was won by Cameron Dobson. We would like to thank Shirley Dobson for inviting everyone to use her beach and we would like to especially thank Karen Gillies for running such an awesome event. Karen is the best fun day event coordinator/planner/hostess this side of the Muskoka River!!!
This year we had 13 contestants in the derby battling for two prizes, biggest pike and biggest bass. It was a clean sweep in both categories as Willi Thurner won the biggest pike with an entry of 2 lbs 8 oz and he also had the biggest bass with 1 lb 10 oz. The president of the association winning both prizes……..hmmmmm sounds fishy. Honourable mention goes to Sam Netten-Mackay and Connor Bliss who had good days but just fell a little short. We hope next year to get more fishermen and liars involved in the derby!!!

It has been brought to our attention about a precedent setting court case involving people who do not pay their fair share of the road. If you go to www.foca.on.ca/case-law you will read about the Point Abino Association versus Lee where the court ruled in favour of the Association and said that Mr. Lee was having “unjust enrichment” by not paying his share. It has also been brought to our attention that other local associations in the area have taken their non-payers to court and won. We are hoping that the remaining outstanding fees are paid and that everyone remains amicable because the feeling at the AGM is to pursue our non-payers as well. We are trying to get the name of the lawyer who handled the local cases as to gauge the cost and direction to follow. We will keep you posted.
If you are a member of our association and have not received the minutes of the Annual Meeting via email, please contact us.
